Santa Fiora, Grosseto - 2005 / 2009
"The enigmatic obviousness of the landscape, or, looking for something that you realize has always been right in front of your eyes."
The grounds that include the Church and the adjoining gardens of the Convent of the Clarisse (XV-XVIII centuries) are at one end of the town of Santa Fiora. From the openings in the walls one can look along the Fiora valley all the way to the sea. Here, a system of terraced plots once farmed, masonry structures and retaining walls, buildings, all offer vantage points from which to look out over the valley’s landscape. Although the buildings here are of great value due to their history and position, this area was afflicted by misuse, the collapse of major structures and widespread neglect.
